Description

CEGEPs and universities continue to centre on European knowledge and teaching approaches, neglecting the wealth of knowledge held by Indigenous and racialized communities. This creates feelings of isolation, shame and disconnect in students from these communities.

Our project aims to remedy this issue. Working with a team of teachers, students and members of Indigenous and racialized communities, we created teaching kits that reflect the knowledge and lived experiences of these communities while strengthening the students’ ability to fight against structural inequalities. After translating these kits to make them available in both French and English, we recruited teachers from several disciplines at CÉGEP Heritage College and CÉGEP de l’Outaouais to pilot the kits in their classes. We meet with these teachers on a regular basis to get their feedback and make the adjustments they recommend. We are also working with an Indigenous-owned graphic design and media company to create a website that will host the teaching kits and provide easy, structured access to future users of the kits.
